“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life— your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:1-3
As we enter into 7in7, I want to take a moment to remind us why we step into a project like this.
Why spend time developing our craft, skill, and gifts that God has given us?
We do all of this so we may learn in our real, everyday lives that we are stewards of all that we have. Our creating, cultivating, and blessing others with our gifts is not an attempt to find value or worth, but instead, a response to the value and worth bestowed on us by the Father through the Son. We create because we have a creative God who made us in his image. We learn to steward because it is an integral part of discipleship. The way of the world says that your time, talent, and treasures are about you, but the way of Jesus is learning that all of it was a gift from Him. Giving these back to Jesus and, in turn, others is not a loss of freedom, but instead, the only way to find it.
So why 7in7?
Our hope is that through the discipline of creating, cultivating, and blessing others over seven days, we will discover more of the ways God has gifted us, and we can see the Spirit free us from fear. We can create because God created us for this very purpose. In Genesis 12, God said that he would bless Abram so that he might be a blessing to the whole world. This is our story as well. We are blessed to be a blessing.
Bring your gifts, talent, and time to the table, trust God with them, and spend seven days prayerfully creating. Let’s see what God does in us and through us!
This Sunday we will start sign-ups for 7in7 where you can share with one another how you plan on using the seven days! If you are unsure about what you might be able to do, ask someone in your missional community or DNA group for ideas on how you can participate.
